Marco Rubio’s 2015 Warning on Iran Goes Viral Again

Melbourne, March 6: A video of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio predicting Iran’s future actions during a Senate speech in 2015 has recently gone viral on social media, with many users praising his remarks as remarkably prescient.

The clip dates back to early 2015 when Rubio, then a Republican senator from Florida, spoke on the floor of the US Senate while positioning himself for a presidential campaign. At that time, Donald Trump had not yet officially announced his own candidacy for the presidency.

During the Republican primaries that followed, Rubio strongly criticised Trump, at one point describing him as a “conman”. However, after Trump secured the party’s nomination and later became president, Rubio eventually reconciled with him and later emerged as one of his close political allies.

The speech came at a time when the administration of then-president Barack Obama had negotiated a landmark nuclear agreement with Iran and several global powers, including members of the European Union. The deal aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for easing certain economic sanctions imposed on the country.

Rubio was among the prominent critics of the agreement, arguing that it was naive and warning that Iran would eventually violate its terms. In 2018, during his first term in office, President Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement, effectively ending the deal.

In the now-viral clip, Rubio warned that Iran would likely use the financial benefits from sanctions relief to expand its conventional military capabilities and strengthen its influence in the Middle East. He also suggested that Iran would continue developing missiles and support militant groups in the region, making it increasingly difficult for US forces to operate there.

Rubio further warned that Iran could eventually pursue nuclear weapons once it reached a point where military intervention against its nuclear programme would become too costly.

Drawing a comparison with North Korea, he cautioned that the world could eventually face a situation where a hostile regime possesses nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, leaving the international community with limited options to respond.

At the time, Rubio said he wanted his warning to be recorded “for history’s purposes”, arguing that those opposing the deal believed it would lead to serious consequences.

With rising tensions in the Middle East and renewed debates about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the resurfaced video has attracted significant attention online. Many social media users are sharing the clip and claiming that Rubio’s decade-old warning now appears strikingly relevant.
