The US Embassy in Dhaka has advised American citizens to remain vigilant ahead of Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12.

Melbourne, 31 January 2026 — The United States Embassy in Bangladesh has issued a security alert for American citizens ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections scheduled for 12 February, warning of potential political violence and extremist attacks during the election period.

In a statement released on Friday, the embassy cautioned that security risks could increase in the days leading up to and following the elections, particularly around political rallies, polling centres, and religious sites.

The embassy urged US citizens to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, including avoiding large crowds and demonstrations, staying aware of their surroundings, monitoring local news, and maintaining a low profile. Americans were also advised to keep their mobile phones charged for emergency communication, review their personal security plans, and prepare alternative travel routes.

The alert reflects growing concerns over the security situation amid heightened political tensions in Bangladesh as the election approaches. Analysts say the warning underscores international apprehension about the potential for unrest during the electoral process.

The US Embassy further advised American nationals to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely security updates and assistance. In case of emergencies, citizens were encouraged to contact the US Embassy in Dhaka or the US State Department’s Consular Affairs office.

Observers note that the issuance of such security alerts is not uncommon during politically sensitive periods, but it highlights the fragile nature of the current political climate in Bangladesh.
