Sydney: To mark Australia Day, the Jagannath Hall Alumni Association Australia (JHAAA) organised a friendly T20 cricket tournament in Sydney, bringing together community members in a spirit of sportsmanship, unity, and celebration. The tournament featured teams from Jagannath Hall Alumni Association Australia and the Hindu Students Association Australia.
Before the match began, a brief remembrance ceremony was held, adding a profound humanitarian and social dimension to the event beyond sporting competition.
In his opening remarks, Bishwajit Chakraborty, Sports Secretary of JHAAA, emphasised that sports in the diaspora are not merely a form of entertainment but a powerful means of strengthening friendship, harmony, and community unity. Following his speech, participants observed a minute of silence to honour the victims of the Bondi incident and to express grief and protest over recent killings of minorities in Bangladesh.
On the field, the Jagannath Hall Alumni Association Australia team displayed resilience and aggressive batting to post a strong total within the allotted overs. In response, the Hindu Students Association Australia fought hard but fell short of the target. As a result, JHAAA secured a convincing 30-run victory and lifted the trophy. Throughout the match, spectators experienced intense excitement, enthusiasm, and warm exchanges of congratulations, making the event lively and memorable.

Alongside the cricket tournament, a volleyball competition was also organised with the participation of JHAAA family members, where men and women of different age groups took part with great enthusiasm. According to the organisers, this family-oriented sporting event fostered closer bonds, mutual understanding, and healthy recreation within the diaspora community.
At the conclusion of the programme, the winning team was awarded the trophy, and organisers thanked all participants and supporters. They expressed hope that similar sporting and social events would be organised on a larger scale in the future, highlighting that sports are not only about competition but also a powerful expression of unity, humanity, and positive community spirit in the diaspora.
