A pioneer of Bengali alternative music, Anjan Dutt mesmerised the audience with his signature storytelling style and a collection of his most beloved songs. Throughout the evening, he performed classics including Amar Janala Diye Ektukhani Akash Dekha Jay, Bela Bose, Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbo Na, Mary Ann, Phele Asha Gaan and Phele Asha Jalsa, among many others. Between performances, he shared personal anecdotes and the stories behind the songs, creating a warm and intimate connection with the audience.
One of the highlights of the evening was the participation of Anjan Dutt’s son, acclaimed music composer and director Neel Dutt. He joined his father for several duet performances that received enthusiastic applause from the audience. Neel also performed a number of songs on his own, adding a fresh dimension to the concert. The father-son collaboration proved to be one of the most memorable aspects of the event.
During the nearly three-hour performance, attendees enjoyed Anjan Dutt’s unique blend of Bengali music influenced by Western folk, blues and country traditions. His songs, often centred on urban life, middle-class struggles, relationships and nostalgia, resonated deeply with the audience and evoked strong emotions.
During the intermission, Goutam Datta, one of the key organisers of Sur-Chhanda, expressed his sincere gratitude to the audience, volunteers and sponsors for their support. He emphasised that the continued promotion of Bengali culture and music in Australia depends greatly on the support of sponsors and community members.

For many members of the Bengali diaspora, his songs are deeply connected to their memories, roots and emotions. They noted that the evening offered a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with Bengali culture despite the demands of life abroad.
Many within Melbourne’s cultural community have described the concert as one of the most successful Bengali musical events of the year. According to the organisers, such initiatives will continue to play an important role in preserving and promoting Bengali culture and heritage among expatriate communities in Australia.
