Chalmers delivers Labor’s ambitious spending plan amid global economic pressure
Melbourne, May 13: Treasurer Jim Chalmers has handed down the 2026 Federal Budget, describing it as “the most important and ambitious budget in decades” as Australia…
Melbourne, May 12 — One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has indicated she would support a Liberal-Nationals Coalition government at the 2028 federal election if her party holds the balance of power.
Following One Nation’s historic victory in the Farrer by-election — a seat previously held by the Coalition for 77 years — Senator Hanson said her party could play a decisive role in forming the next federal government.
Speaking to The Australian on Monday, Senator Hanson said One Nation would be prepared to provide “supply and confidence” support to the Coalition if required.
“If the Coalition gets the numbers and they require our support to form government, then I will give them supply and confidence,” she said.
However, Hanson made it clear she had no interest in taking a ministerial position in any future arrangement.
“I don’t want a ministerial position because that would allow them to control me and force me to support bad legislation. I’m not going to do that,” she said.
At the same time, Hanson questioned whether the Coalition would return the favour if One Nation were to secure more seats in the future.
“If we end up with more members than they do and we require their numbers to form government, will they give us the same deal? We don’t know what the future holds. The people are angry. The people have had enough,” she said.
The by-election result followed One Nation’s strongest electoral performance in South Australia earlier this year and marked the first time the party has won a seat in the federal lower house.
Despite the growing momentum, Hanson said it was too early to begin formal negotiations over any power-sharing arrangement with the Coalition.
“There’s still two years before the next election. Hopefully we’ll be able to work together with Coalition governments in Victoria and New South Wales before then,” she said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticised the Liberal and National parties for preferencing One Nation in the Farrer by-election, accusing them of helping legitimise the far-right populist party.
Speaking to 4CA Cairns radio, Mr Albanese warned that the Coalition may increasingly rely on One Nation to remain politically competitive.
“What is very clear now is that the chances of the Liberal Party and National Party forming government by themselves do not look likely,” he said.
“The fact they are openly talking about what would effectively become a three-party government shows how unstable a Liberal-National-One Nation government could be.”
