India lift the T20 World Cup trophy for the third time in their history.
Melbourne, March 9: Finals are usually defined by tension, fierce competition and last-minute drama. But the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad told a completely different story. From start to finish, India dominated the match, defeating New Zealand by a huge margin to become world champions for the second consecutive time.
With this victory, India became the first team in T20 World Cup history to successfully defend the title. The triumph also marks India’s third T20 World Cup win.
After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner elected to send India in to bat. The Indian openers began cautiously but soon launched an aggressive assault on the Kiwi bowlers. India raced to 92 runs in the first six overs of the powerplay without losing a wicket, with boundaries and sixes flowing freely.
Abhishek Sharma played a sensational innings, reaching his half-century in just 18 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 51 off 21 deliveries. Sanju Samson continued the aggressive momentum alongside Ishan Kishan after coming in at number two.
Samson looked set for a century but was finally dismissed for 89 off 46 balls, an innings that included five fours and eight sixes. Ishan Kishan also impressed with a quickfire 54 from 25 balls, hitting four boundaries and four sixes.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed on the very first ball he faced, while Hardik Pandya contributed 18 runs from 13 deliveries. In the closing overs, Shivam Dube smashed an unbeaten 26 from just eight balls, while Tilak Varma added 8 runs from six deliveries.
For New Zealand, James Neesham was the most successful bowler with three wickets. Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra claimed one wicket each.
Chasing a massive target, New Zealand struggled from the very beginning. Within the powerplay they lost four key wickets – Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman – putting them under immediate pressure.
Opener Tim Seifert offered some resistance with a blistering innings of 52 runs from 26 balls. Daryl Mitchell scored 17 runs, while captain Mitchell Santner fought hard with 43 runs from 35 balls.
However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to build partnerships. James Neesham scored 8, Matt Henry was dismissed for a duck, Lockie Ferguson made 2, and Jacob Duffy managed just 1 run.
New Zealand eventually suffered a heavy defeat, losing the title as India sealed another historic triumph.
With this victory, India have maintained their remarkable success in ICC tournaments, adding the 2026 T20 World Cup to their recent titles after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
