Melbourne, 14 March: Australia’s women’s football team, the Matildas, advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s Asian Cup 2026 after defeating North Korea 2–1 in a thrilling quarter-final match in Perth. Alanna Kennedy and captain Sam Kerr played crucial roles in securing the victory.
The match, held at Perth Rectangular Stadium on Friday night, was attended by 16,466 spectators. Australia took the lead early in the ninth minute when Alanna Kennedy scored from a corner kick, brilliantly heading the ball into the net. It was her fifth goal of the tournament.
Although Australia created few attacking opportunities in the first half, the hosts doubled their lead shortly after the break. In the 47th minute, captain Sam Kerr struck an outstanding goal to put the Matildas ahead 2–0.
However, much of the match was controlled by North Korea, currently ranked ninth in the world. The team continued to apply pressure and reduced the margin in the 65th minute when Choe Un-yong scored to make it 2–1.

The closing stages of the match proved tense for Australia, as North Korea launched several attacks that kept the Matildas’ defence under constant pressure. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold made a number of crucial saves to protect the lead, including a remarkable stop from a powerful long-range shot by An Kuk-hyang from about 38 yards.
In the end, the 2010 champions managed to hold onto their advantage and secure a place in the semi-finals. Australia will face either China or Taiwan in the semi-final at Perth Stadium next Tuesday.
With this victory, Australia has also secured direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Interestingly, Australia managed only one shot during the first half, but that single effort turned into a decisive goal that laid the foundation for their victory.
