Is she real? World Cup “Supporter” Goes Viral as AI Image Leaves Fans Duped

The fake image showed a fan in USA-themed attire, quickly gaining over 120,000 likes on social media platform X.

Melbourne, June 14: A viral image of a supposed United States football supporter at the FIFA World Cup has taken social media by storm, but it has now emerged that the widely shared photo was not real, leaving many fans surprised and misled.

The image appeared online shortly after the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) opened their campaign with a 4–1 victory over Paraguay on Saturday morning (AEST). The picture showed a woman wearing a USA-themed bikini and face paint, and quickly gained massive attention, attracting more than 120,000 likes on social media platform X.

Many users initially praised the image, with comments celebrating the moment and even applauding the photographer. One user wrote, “Frames that make you love football,” while another commented, “We must find out who this stunning woman is.” Others called it “already the picture of the tournament,” while some praised the cameraman for capturing the moment.

However, the excitement soon turned into confusion after it was revealed that the subject of the image was not a real person. The photo is now understood to have been generated using artificial intelligence.

In an unexpected twist, X’s own AI tool, Grok, reportedly confirmed that the image was fake, further fuelling online debate. Some users reacted with disappointment, with one writing, “Shame she is AI!” while another added, “She is AI but still beautiful.”

The incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing between real and AI-generated content online, particularly during major global events where images spread rapidly.

In a separate viral moment from the same event, a real football fan drew attention after attempting to rush onto the pitch and being swiftly stopped by stadium security. The supporter was tackled and restrained by stewards moments after jumping from the stands, with the incident quickly circulating online and being dubbed by some users as the “worst streaker ever.”

The contrasting viral moments have once again highlighted how quickly football-related content—both real and artificial—can capture global attention during major tournaments.
