London, 6 November 2025: The Right Honourable Lord Carlile of Berriew CBE KC, a member of the UK House of Lords and a distinguished barrister, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing political situation in Bangladesh. He stated that since the political upheaval of 2024, the country has been facing several serious challenges that have drawn the attention and concern of the international community.
In his statement, Lord Carlile said, “The next national election in Bangladesh must not repeat the mistakes of the past. It must be participatory, inclusive, free, and fair — and conducted under the supervision of independent international observers.”

He emphasised that all sections of Bangladeshi society should take part in the democratic process and contribute to the revival of democratic institutions, values, and culture.
Addressing the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) process, Lord Carlile noted, “While the ICT proceedings are ongoing, the system in its current form urgently requires reform to meet international standards. The trials must be transparent, fair, and conducted in strict adherence to the law and the constitution.”
Expressing concern for minority communities, he said, “Minority groups in Bangladesh are under considerable pressure and need guaranteed protection from both the state and opposing forces.”
He also drew attention to the deteriorating state of law enforcement, stating, “The law enforcement mechanism is in disarray. The Rule of Law must be upheld.”
Lord Carlile’s statement has sparked renewed discussion among international observers regarding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Bangladesh.
