OTN Bangla Desk: Land and property disputes, disappearances, kidnappings, physical assaults, attacks on religious sites, murders and mysterious deaths feature in the July–September 2026 quarterly monitoring update published by the Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM).

According to the organisation’s infographic, 498 incidents against minority communities were recorded during the three-month period: 168 in July, 180 in August and 150 in September. August recorded the highest monthly total. Although the number declined in September, that change alone does not establish an improvement in the overall security situation.

HRCBM has presented data on 498 incidents from July–September 2026.

Land, Property and Assault-Related Incidents Lead the Figures

HRCBM’s category breakdown lists land and property-related incidents as the largest category, with 150 cases. The combined category of disappearances, kidnappings and assaults follows, with a stated total of 149 incidents.

Land and property-related incidents rose from 45 in July to 69 in August before falling to 36 in September. The monthly figures for disappearances, kidnappings and assaults were 49, 50 and 49 respectively.

Understanding how these incidents affected homes, livelihoods and personal safety requires a detailed examination of individual cases.

97 Incidents Categorised as Murder and Mysterious Death

The report records 97 incidents in the combined category of murder and mysterious death—40 in July, 27 in August and 30 in September. HRCBM describes the figure as alarmingly high.

These figures refer to recorded incidents; the infographic does not separately specify the total number of people killed.

Attacks on Religious Sites and Sexual Violence

The update lists 77 attacks on religious sites during the quarter: 25 in July, 22 in August and 30 in September. September recorded the highest monthly figure in this category.

HRCBM also records 18 incidents of sexual violence. The organisation cautions that such incidents are likely to be underreported because stigma, fear and social taboos can discourage minority families from making complaints. Consequently, the recorded figures may not fully reflect the extent of the problem.

A further eight incidents are listed in the blasphemy-related category.

Calls for Protection, Impartial Investigations and Accountability

Expressing concern over the findings, human rights activists said the safety of minorities, their ability to report complaints without fear, and their access to justice remain recurring concerns.

They stressed the importance of impartial investigations into every allegation, protection for those affected, and transparent information about the progress of investigations and judicial proceedings. Such measures, they said, are essential to assessing the situation and ensuring accountability.

HRCBM’s Bangladesh coordinator, Advocate Lucky Bachar, told OTN Bangla:

“We must not allow silence to become our destiny as we continue to endure injustice. Remember, you are not alone. Every tear you shed and every pain you endure touches us too; protecting your rights is a responsibility we all share. Let us overcome fear through unity, courage and peaceful protest, and stand together to safeguard our dignity, our rights and the safety of future generations.”
