Melbourne, 27 November 2025: Attending a major international conference has long been a cherished dream of mine. Every year, geographical distance and various other challenges had prevented me from taking part in such events. This year, however, my dream finally came true through the IATUL Conference Travel Grant. I am sincerely grateful to the Board of Directors for considering my application and granting me the opportunity to attend the 45th IATUL Conference at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU).

The grant award notification from Ms Rita Pape at the IATUL Office marked the beginning of an exciting journey. From that moment, the real challenges commenced. Obtaining a visa for China from Bangladesh is a lengthy process, usually taking around two months. Additionally, transferring the registration fee via SWIFT proved difficult according to the agent handling the matter. Despite these obstacles, I remained positive and worked closely with local agents to complete all necessary formalities.

My scheduled flight was from Dhaka to Shanghai with a transit stop in Beijing. However, upon arrival at the airport on 1 November 2025, I was informed that the flight date and time had been changed due to winter scheduling—leaving me with a ticket but no plane. Neither the agent nor the airline had notified me. With a heavy heart, I was about to return home when, fortunately, I managed to contact the Executive Magistrate, who intervened and arranged an alternative flight.

The first day of the conference, 2 November 2025, began with registration followed by an introductory session for participants, IATUL Board Members and organisers. The evening featured a vibrant traditional Kung Fu performance and live demonstrations at the SJTU Student Centre, creating an enjoyable and welcoming environment for everyone.

The conference theme, “Exploring the Future of Libraries: Connection, Innovation, and Impact,” was reflected across keynote speeches, breakout sessions and lightning talks. I gained substantial insights into AI and its applications in libraries, service innovations, emerging technologies, transformation of library systems and services, skill development, and many other contemporary topics. The lively question-and-answer sessions helped bridge gaps and illuminate many unknown or emerging issues.

Across the three-day event, five keynote papers were presented by distinguished scholars who shared real-world experiences, research findings, and their visions for the future of university libraries. Enthusiastic young professionals from China also presented impressive papers filled with valuable information and data.

An engaging poster exhibition on the second floor highlighted timely and important topics. I enjoyed exploring each of them. Several sponsors—including CACTUS, e-marefa, Elsevier and EBSCO—showcased their products and services. The involvement of publishers and technology providers added immense value by creating meaningful connections between library professionals and industry partners.

The conference was not limited to academic activities alone. A memorable Gala Dinner aboard a Huangpu River cruise offered an enchanting evening featuring a face-changing performance, a magic show, traditional Chinese music and exquisite cuisine. The spectacular light displays along the riverbank made it feel as though we had stepped into another world. The following day’s study tour was equally enjoyable and enriching.

Parting with new colleagues and friends on the final day was emotional, yet it also marked the beginning of new professional relationships and future collaborations. I am grateful to the IATUL Board and organisers for recognising the travel grant recipients during the conference. The guided tour of the SJTU Library was particularly impressive and informative.

Before concluding, I would like to share a suggestion on behalf of library professionals from Bangladesh: many are eager to attend IATUL conferences but often find the registration fees challenging. Introducing a dedicated participation tier or concession for professionals from developing countries would greatly encourage broader international participation.

I feel honoured and proud to have participated in the 45th IATUL Annual Conference at Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a travel grant recipient. It was truly a rewarding and unforgettable experience.
