Melbourne, June 14: Bangladeshi-born American DJ, music producer and artist Sanjoy Deb has captured global attention after performing at the spectacular opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Canada, bringing a touch of Bangladesh to one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

Held at Toronto’s BMO Stadium, the opening ceremony featured a vibrant performance of FIFA’s newly released anthem, “SIR SIR,” performed by Sanjoy Deb alongside Bollywood star Nora Fatehi and French hip-hop artist Vegedream. While the performance impressed football fans worldwide, it was Sanjoy’s tribute to Bangladesh that particularly resonated with millions of Bangladeshis.

Dressed in a maroon suit specially designed for the occasion, Sanjoy incorporated iconic Bangladeshi symbols into his outfit. The sleeves of his jacket featured artwork inspired by the Royal Bengal Tiger, Bangladesh’s national flower, the water lily, and elements of the country’s red-and-green flag.

Bangladeshi-born American artist Sanjoy Deb proudly showcases Bangladesh through his specially designed outfit featuring the Royal Bengal Tiger, water lily and national colours.

Throughout the performance, Sanjoy repeatedly pointed to the designs on his jacket, proudly highlighting his heritage on the global stage. For many viewers, it was a powerful and emotional moment, symbolising Bangladesh’s presence at one of the world’s most-watched events.

Just a few years ago, seeing the colours of Bangladesh and the image of the Bengal Tiger represented at a FIFA World Cup opening ceremony might have seemed unimaginable. Yet Sanjoy Deb made that vision a reality.

Born in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, Bangladesh, Sanjoy moved to the United States with his parents, Santosh Deb and Mita Deb, nearly two decades ago. There, he developed his musical career and established himself as a respected producer and performer. Over the years, he has collaborated with numerous Bangladeshi artists and has also worked on projects in the Bollywood music industry.

His appearance at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony marks a major milestone in a career built through dedication, creativity and hard work. However, beyond the personal achievement, Sanjoy’s decision to celebrate his Bangladeshi roots on such a prestigious stage made the moment even more meaningful.

Following the event, Sanjoy shared a 65-second video clip of the performance on social media. The video quickly went viral, attracting more than six million views within ten hours. It also received around 350,000 reactions, nearly 10,000 shares and more than 4,000 comments.

For Bangladeshis around the world, Sanjoy Deb’s performance was more than an artistic success. It was a proud celebration of identity, culture and heritage, demonstrating that Bangladesh’s story can be told and celebrated on the world’s biggest stages.
