Melbourne, January 7: The White House has confirmed that US president Donald Trump is seriously considering using military force to take control of Greenland, following the recent US operation that led to the capture and removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Trump has spoken for months about acquiring foreign territory, but the latest statement from the White House indicates the idea is now being treated as a real strategic option. Officials told Reuters that Trump and his senior advisers are formally discussing ways to bring Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, under US control, and that military action is “always an option.”

The renewed push comes in the wake of the dramatic Venezuela operation, which saw Maduro removed from power and sent to face trial in the United States. That move has triggered a wave of optimism among global investors, particularly in Venezuela. The Caracas Stock Exchange has nearly doubled in value this week, as markets anticipate the opening of the country’s vast oil reserves to international energy companies.

Investor interest has surged, with hedge funds and global financial players now eyeing Venezuela as a major reconstruction and investment opportunity. Charles Myers, chairman of Signum Global Advisors, told The Wall Street Journal that he plans to travel to Venezuela with a group of top hedge fund managers to explore potential deals. He said the country could attract up to US$750 billion in investment over the next five years.

“There is a huge amount of interest in Venezuela reconstruction opportunities,” Myers said. “The new government will be welcoming foreign direct investment from day one, and Venezuela could bounce back quickly.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s Greenland ambitions have drawn international attention. Greenland is a strategically important Arctic territory rich in natural resources and shipping routes, and Trump has long argued that US control would be vital for national security and to counter rivals such as Russia and China in the region. Denmark and Greenland have both made clear they have no intention of giving up the territory.

The White House said Trump views Greenland as a priority for US national security, particularly to “deter our adversaries in the Arctic region.” The Venezuela operation has brought this issue back to the forefront, demonstrating Trump’s willingness to use military power to advance geopolitical goals.

However, Trump’s stance has met resistance even within the United States. A bipartisan pair of senators, Republican Thom Tillis and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, have urged him to abandon the idea.

Greenland, a vast Arctic territory of Denmark, has become the focus of growing geopolitical tension as the United States weighs the possibility of asserting control over the island.

“Denmark is one of our oldest and most reliable allies,” they said in a joint statement. “Danish troops have fought and died alongside Americans in many conflicts, and Denmark was among the first to stand with us after 9/11. When Denmark and Greenland make it clear that Greenland is not for sale, the United States must respect their sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Despite growing opposition, the White House has not ruled out any options, keeping military action firmly on the table as Trump continues to push his controversial plan to expand US control abroad.
