Melbourne, 22 August- Police have recovered the body of Nayeb Ali, 60, a former leader of the now-banned Awami League, from a water-filled ditch in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria, two days after he went missing. Police said there were signs of injury on his body.
The body was recovered on Friday afternoon, 21 August, from Dhajnagar village, a border-area village in Gopinathpur Union of Kasba Upazila. Nayeb Ali was the son of the late Abdur Rahim of the same village. He was a former general secretary of the Awami League’s Ward No. 8 unit in Gopinathpur Union.
Family members said Nayeb Ali left home at around 9.30pm on Wednesday and went to a banana plantation near his house. He had not been seen since. Family members searched several places but could not find him.
Later, while searching the banana plantation and surrounding areas, family members and locals found some of Nayeb Ali’s belongings, including a torch, lungi, towel, packet of bidis and a gas lighter. The discovery prompted them to continue searching the surrounding area.
On Friday afternoon, locals spotted Nayeb Ali’s body in a ditch near his home. Police were informed and went to the scene before recovering the body.
Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Mohammad Rashed said there were visible signs of injury on the body. The body will be sent for a post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be determined after the report is received.
He said police were treating the incident as a serious matter and investigating how Nayeb Ali died, where he may have been after going missing and whether anyone was involved in his death.
Legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident.
