Australia Prioritises Visa Processing for Urgent Farm Workers — But No New “Agriculture Visa” Has Been Announced

Australia has not launched a new Agriculture or Farm Visa. The latest measure only prioritises certain existing Working Holiday Maker visa applications for urgent agricultural jobs ahead of the harvest season. OTN Bangla

OTN Bangla Desk: Australia has introduced priority processing for some urgent Working Holiday Maker (WHM) visa applications to help address labour shortages in the agricultural sector ahead of the upcoming harvest season.

However, the development has been presented by some social media pages and media outlets as Australia “urgently issuing agriculture visas”. That description is misleading. Australia has not announced a new general Agriculture Visa or Farm Visa program.

For example, a popular Bangladeshi newspaper, Daily Jugantor, published the headline: “Australia issuing agriculture visas on an urgent basis.”

A Reuters report published on 24 September, citing Grain Producers Australia (GPA), said the Australian Government had agreed to prioritise the processing of visa applications for certain temporary agricultural workers. The measure is aimed at helping farmers secure essential workers before the harvesting of crops such as wheat, barley and canola begins.

Grain Producers Australia has clarified that the special arrangement applies mainly to urgent Working Holiday Maker visa cases. This means the worker must already have applied for an eligible WHM visa, have employment arranged with a specific Australian farm or agricultural business, and need to arrive in Australia urgently for that work.

These urgent cases can be referred to the Department of Home Affairs through relevant state farming organisations and the National Farmers’ Federation.

Importantly, GPA has also stressed that referring an application for priority consideration does not guarantee faster processing or visa approval. Applicants must still meet all normal visa eligibility and assessment requirements.

The development follows comments by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke on 17 September, when he outlined changes to visa processing priorities affecting sectors including agriculture, fisheries, construction and teaching.

GPA has previously noted that Working Holiday Maker visa holders play an important role in Australia’s agricultural workforce, particularly during harvest periods.

Important message to OTN Bangla readers and viewers

OTN Bangla urges members of the community not to be misled by headlines claiming that “Australia is urgently issuing agriculture visas.”

The announcement does not mean that people from Bangladesh or other countries can now apply directly for a newly created “Agriculture Visa” or “Farm Visa”.

The key point is this:

The arrangement is a priority-processing mechanism for certain applicants who have already applied for an eligible Working Holiday Maker visa and who have a specific agricultural job arranged in Australia.

Anyone claiming that Australia has “opened a new farm visa” or that they can arrange an urgent agricultural visa in exchange for money should be treated with caution. Applicants should always verify information through the official Australian Department of Home Affairs.

Bangladesh is also not included in the eligible passport-country lists for either of Australia’s two Working Holiday Maker streams. According to the Department of Home Affairs, Bangladeshi passport holders are not eligible for the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) or the first Working Holiday visa (subclass 417).

Before making any decision, check the official rules and original government sources — not just media headlines or social media posts.
