Melbourne, 25 February: Australia has issued urgent travel warnings for its citizens in Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates as security conditions in the Middle East continue to deteriorate. Citing a “deteriorating situation,” the Australian government has directed the immediate departure of all dependants of Australian officials posted in several countries across the region.

According to the government’s travel advisory website Smartraveller, families of Australian officials stationed in Israel and Lebanon have been ordered to leave immediately due to the worsening security environment. Warnings were also issued for those in Jordan and the UAE, urging Australians to reconsider travel plans because of the volatile security situation, armed conflict, civil unrest and the ongoing threat of terrorism.

Australians in the region have been advised to consider leaving while commercial travel options remain available.

NewsWire reports the move is a precautionary measure. Australian embassies in Tel Aviv, Beirut, Amman, Doha and Abu Dhabi remain open. The government has also offered voluntary departures to all dependants of Australian officials posted in Jordan, Qatar and the UAE.

Smartraveller has warned Australians not to travel to border areas with Gaza (Palestine) or Lebanon. Rising regional tensions have increased the risk of military conflict, with authorities cautioning that airports could close, flights could be cancelled and air strikes could occur without notice, along with other major travel disruptions.

A government spokesperson said: “Reconsider your need to travel overall due to the uncertain security environment. Terror attacks can occur anywhere at any time, including by lone actors.

“There continues to be a very high threat of military and terrorist attacks against Israel, and against Israeli and Jewish interests across the region.

“Prioritise your safety, monitor developments closely, and follow local advice.”
