Melbourne, January 18: A notable controversy overshadowed the ICC Under-19 World Cup clash between India and Bangladesh in Bulawayo after the two captains declined to exchange handshakes during the toss, reigniting debate about sportsmanship in one of youth cricket’s most intense rivalries.

The refusal to greet each other sparked immediate reaction among fans and commentators, with many questioning the message such gestures send to young players and supporters. The India–Bangladesh rivalry at youth level has often been emotionally charged, with previous encounters witnessing heated on-field exchanges.

Renowned cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle commented on the incident, saying, “While rivalries are natural in sport, respect for the game and the opponent must remain above everything. Every action on the field sets an example for the next generation.”

India Post 238 Before Rain Intervenes

On the field, India batted first and were bowled out for 238 in 48.4 overs. Bangladesh began the chase confidently and reached 90 for 2 in 17.2 overs before rain forced an interruption.

Under the revised Duckworth-Lewis method, the target was reduced to 165 runs from 29 overs. This left Bangladesh needing 75 runs from the remaining 11.4 overs (70 balls) with eight wickets in hand — a position from which victory appeared highly likely.

Captain Azizul Hakim and Kalam Siddiqui were at the crease, and momentum seemed firmly with Bangladesh.

Stunning Collapse Hands India Victory

However, the match took a dramatic turn as Bangladesh collapsed under pressure. Wickets tumbled in quick succession, and the side was eventually bowled out for 146 in 28.3 overs, handing India a remarkable win.

The defeat prompted criticism from supporters who felt Bangladesh had squandered a golden opportunity. Analysts pointed to poor shot selection and lack of composure in the final overs.

Debate Over Spirit of Cricket

The handshake incident continued to dominate discussion after the match. Many fans expressed disappointment, arguing that mutual respect should rise above past grievances. Others believed the snub reflected the fierce competitive nature of the rivalry.

Cricket experts emphasised that the Under-19 World Cup is a platform to nurture not only talent but also character. With teams like Pakistan, Australia and England also competing, the tournament is viewed as a stepping stone for future international stars.

There are growing calls for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to promote initiatives encouraging positive interaction between young players.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on how both sides respond — not only in terms of performance, but in demonstrating the values of respect and sportsmanship that lie at the heart of cricket.
