Melbourne, 26 August: Students formed a human chain at Shahbagh in the capital on Wednesday, demanding an impartial investigation, disclosure of the complete circumstances and a speedy trial over the killing of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family.

The demonstration began at 11:00 am and was organised by former and current students of Rangpur Zilla School, along with students from various educational institutions in Rangpur who are currently living in Dhaka.

Students and concerned citizens joined the programme, calling for everyone involved in the killings to be brought swiftly to justice and given exemplary punishment.

Speakers said the brutal killing of four members of one family—including Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife, son and daughter—had deeply affected not only their relatives but society as a whole.

They demanded that investigators ensure the truth was not concealed because of procedural gaps, outside influence or other failures. The demonstrators also called for apparent inconsistencies in the available information to be examined through an impartial, scientific and technology-assisted investigation.

According to information cited by the protesters, Agami Chakraborty, one of the victims, sent a message to a friend at 5:50 am stating that there was no electricity at the family’s home. However, the accused reportedly claimed that the killings had taken place around midnight.

The students said the apparent discrepancy between these accounts must be clarified through forensic and digital evidence.

They also demanded an investigation into the reported extended power outage on the night of the killings and why a CCTV camera at a neighbouring temple had suddenly stopped functioning.

Participants further said Agami Chakraborty had sought advice from a friend in May about filing a general diary, or GD, with the police. Investigators should determine whether she had received threats or feared for her safety, they said.

The demonstrators also raised questions about the period before the bodies were discovered. According to them, the family had remained unaccounted for for nearly two days. They called for scrutiny of the actions of neighbours and acquaintances during that period, as well as the response of law-enforcement agencies.

The students urged the authorities to examine every relevant lead and ensure that the investigation established the full truth behind the killings.
