MELBOURNE, July 28: Another incident of violence targeting members of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority has raised concerns over the country’s recurring pattern of mob attacks following allegations of religious insult on social media. This time, two Hindu homes in Kalmakanda Upazila of Netrokona District were attacked and vandalised after allegations emerged over Facebook posts deemed offensive to religious sentiments.

While police have filed a case against the two accused under the Cyber Security Act 2026, questions have been raised over the apparent lack of legal action against those who carried out the attack on their homes.

According to police and the First Information Report (FIR), one of the accused shared a Facebook post on Friday regarding an ongoing movement in India. Authorities alleged that the language used in the post could incite religious hatred and tension. Another young man allegedly posted a comment that was considered offensive to religious beliefs. The posts quickly spread across social media, triggering public outrage.

“However, no official information has been released so far regarding the actual content or what was written in the Facebook post at the center of the allegations.”

On Sunday evening, a group of people reportedly attacked and vandalised the homes of the two accused. Police later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Later that night, Sub-Inspector Abdul Mannan of Kalmakanda Police Station filed a case against the two young men under Section 26(1) of the Cyber Security Act 2026. Police said efforts are underway to arrest the accused and that further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

However, members of the affected families questioned why they became the targets of mob violence before any judicial process had taken place.

“If someone has committed an offence, we want them to be punished according to the law,” a relative of one of the victims said. “But why were our homes attacked and destroyed? We had to flee to save our lives. When we returned, everything had been ransacked. We are living in fear.”

Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman of Kalmakanda Police Station confirmed that an angry crowd had attacked and vandalised the homes before police intervened. He said the law-and-order situation is now under control and that additional police have been deployed to prevent further unrest.

The latest incident has once again highlighted concerns over a recurring pattern in Bangladesh, where allegations of blasphemy or religious insult shared on social media are followed by attacks on minority communities before investigations are completed. Human rights observers have repeatedly warned that while allegations should be investigated through due legal process, those who engage in mob violence and property destruction must also be held accountable under the law.

Legal analysts say that equal enforcement of the law against both alleged offenders and those responsible for vigilante attacks is essential to uphold the rule of law and prevent a culture of impunity.
