Melbourne, 14 July — The arrest of Haridas Chandra Tarani Das, founder of the Sri Sri Radha Gobinda and Kali Temple in Palashbari, Gaibandha, has triggered fresh political controversy in Bangladesh. Haridas, who recently drew national attention after announcing plans to build an 81-foot-tall statue of Lord Ram, was arrested in connection with a money laundering case, prompting questions from critics about the timing and circumstances of the arrest.

The development comes at a time when Bangladesh’s ruling BNP-led government has reportedly been facing increasing political pressure from the Jamaat alliance and other opposition groups. In recent weeks, the alliance has organized several large public rallies criticizing the government.

Haridas’ announcement to construct what was described as the world’s largest Ram statue also attracted widespread attention and criticism from extremist groups. Reports circulated on social media alleging threats against members of the Hindu community, including incidents in which images of Lord Ram were publicly desecrated. Critics argue that neither the government nor major opposition parties took visible action against those responsible for such incidents.

Political observers and government critics have alleged that the arrest of Haridas was intended to divert public attention from other major political developments, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s announcement that she intends to return to Bangladesh in December. These claims, however, have not been substantiated by official evidence, and the government has not publicly responded to the allegations.

Haridas’ lawyer has challenged the money laundering case, arguing that the allegations do not match the information contained in the First Information Report (FIR). The defense also claims investigators failed to present evidence supporting accusations that foreign funds were illegally brought into Bangladesh for the temple project. Despite these arguments, the court granted investigators a four-day remand for questioning.

According to police, members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)’s Financial Crime Unit arrested Haridas around 12:30 a.m. on 12 July during an operation at the Sri Sri Kali Temple area in Palashbari, Gaibandha. He was produced before a Dhaka court on 13 July.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly condemned the arrest and demanded Haridas’ immediate release. In a statement, the organization questioned why individuals accused of spreading communal hatred and religious incitement had not faced similar legal action, arguing that the arrest raises concerns about equal application of the law.

Law enforcement authorities maintain that Haridas was arrested solely in connection with a money laundering case filed at Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka. Officials say the investigation remains ongoing.

The allegations and political claims cited in this report reflect statements made by lawyers, political critics, and community organizations. They have not been independently verified, and the investigation into the money laundering case is still underway.
